Previous Project 1:Electronic Lab Notebook – ELN(Sep’10-Jun’13)

Description:Electronic Lab Notebook is key application in Novozymes R&D department that replaces the daily manual research paper work. A basic electronic lab notebook system (ELN) consists of an authoring tool, notebook management and digital signing software. As today with the paper lab notebook, the system will support a number of lab notebooks. The lab notebooks are virtual of cause and can span sites, locations and have no practical limit in number of pages. It will be up to the super users of the system to administrate lab notebooks. An electronic lab notebook is regarded as collection of experiments grouped together (by project or personal).
An experiment is seen as a collection of following data:
- Office document (Word/Excel) with experiment notes
- PDF file with digital signature, rendered directly from the Office document
- Supplementary files, e.g., raw data, spreadsheets, etc.
- Images (gels, chromatograms, etc.). This is basically also just supplementary files
- Meta data about the experiment (experiment number and name, project, author, department, etc.)
SharePoint is used as central experiment repository and integration platform. Since quite a lot of experiment and files will be created in the system, and there are some specific requirements on security and search on experiment level, the technical design of the SharePoint model is very important.
